Case Study: Improving the Sustainability of Tesco's Store Fixtures

Project date: 2007
Brief:
- more stringent requirements were being placed on the design and specification of new store fixtures and the re-design of existing equipment to make sure that they are more ‘eco-friendly’.
- as a result Q4 was commissioned to identify opportunities to improve the ‘Eco-friendliness’ of Tesco’s store fixtures
- Q4 to explore ways of improving the “eco-friendliness” of the equipment in terms of both the type and amount of material used and the unit’s construction in terms of future recycling
- an additional aim was to reduce their Carbon Footprint by 50%
Challenges:
- at the same time the improvements had to remain cost-neutral (at worst)
Output::
- audit of the Hull store’s ambient store fixtures and collation of relevant data and segmentation of equipment into main types
- for this project utilised Tesco’s existing materials database (Gabi) in conjunction with Q4’s engineering skills in analysis
- recommendations on improving ‘Eco-friendly’ aspects
- Identified opportunities to reduce materials and components
- initiatives developed and many trialled in the Cheetham Hill store and subsequently adopted as standard in the ongoing store fit programme
